わたしが覚えている最初に聴いたクラシック音楽は、映画のサウンドトラックだった。子どものころのアニメーション漫画で、登場人物たちがリストのハンガリー狂詩曲やロッシーニやズッペの序曲に合わせて、互いに追いかけあったり、ふざけあったり、叩きあったりしていた。これらの曲が使われたのは名曲だからではなく、動きにあふれていたし、著作権が切れていたからである――現存の作曲家を雇うよりもはるかに安上がりなのだ（それにたぶん出来も良い）。ウッディ・アレンが自分の映画のサウンドトラックにクラシック音楽を使おうと決めるに際しては高尚な理由があったはずで、バッハからプロコフィエフまで彼の選曲はもっと洗練されている。このきわめて多岐にわたるコレクションは、多くのリスナーにとって幸福な発見に満ちあふれていることだろう。それに映画のなかで聴いて、いつまでも心に残っている曲を確認するのにも役立つだろう。(Joe McLellan, Amazon.com)
