Instead of clomping a mechanical beat beneath Schwarzenegger's feet as in the Terminator movies, director Jim Cameron this time wanted to send-up the Austrian Oak as a super-spy. In almost vaudeville style Brad Fiedel begins with a theatrical drum roll for "Main Title/Harry Makes His Entrance". The score then gives way to a high-speed synth chase where the orchestra almost loses the race to finish first for the movie's prologue Bond spoof. In a nice change of pace, the music has by this point become comical footpadding. This is without doubt Fiedel's most melodic work, but it's for the individual ear to decide whether the electronic overlays have diluted the worthy tunes. Harry's theme is a sprightly, tub-thumping piece that would have worked either as pure live instrumentation or entirely synthesised. Like several other film composers, he seems compelled to run parallel with both. The songs hardly make a dent in the movie, but somehow necessitate a whole first half of this disc to themselves (two versions of Living Colour's "Sunshine of Your Love"?). But a little judicious re-ordering goes a long way. --Paul Tonks
