レビュー (Amazon) Sam Peckinpah's last film, The Osterman Weekend, was a complicated piece of espionage hokum with a rag-tag character actor cast. It needed a special voice to lift it, and that came from Lalo Schifrin's breezily mellow score. "Restless Nights" features a saxophone blowing 1980s sensuality over a bed of brushed cymbals, guitar, and keyboards. This is the dominating sound you'll remember the album for, especially as it's reprised at length at the end in "Face Of Love". The style has dated: "Love Theme" is a classic example of what we once thought was cool about synthesisers--mimicking a harpsichord backed by a simple counter melody. Schifrin works a little magic into what otherwise could sound old hat: his tricky jazz rhythms keep any instrumental grouping interesting. Soundtrack fans are after all still dazzled by his Bullitt, so why not this lightweight thriller too? --Paul Tonks |
