レビュー (Amazon) Opening to the other-worldly tonalities of a glass harp, the "Suite" to The Last September begins an unconventional approach to atmosphere that extends beyond these nine minutes and into the rest of the album. Elizabeth Bowen's book is quite faithfully followed by the film in depicting the erosion of class and ideal amid the cessation of British rule over Ireland. The result is a character-driven piece with lots of "open spaces" for Polish composer Priesner to create effect with his penchant for piano and harp. That effect is a subduing of the drama, almost a drawstring preventing it from slipping into melodrama. These 35 minutes of score music in isolation have a most tranquil consequence on the listener. There are moments peaking with jubilance ("The Tennis Party"), and there are low-end sombre interludes ("Death at the Mill"). But it's a rare thing in the world of soundtracks to sustain one overall mood without a sudden change of pace. --Paul Tonks |
