レビュー (Amazon) Bracketing a soundtrack album with two versions of the same song ("Almost Like Being In Love"), and stringing extracts of dialogue along the way are sort of cardinal aural sins: they usually distract and irritate aficionados and casual listeners alike. However, simple use of the skip button will eradicate these errors and leave something engagingly entertaining. A lounge-jazz slinkiness that Henry Mancini would have been proud of isn't what you'd expect for an Oscar Wilde adaptation, but it's an even bigger surprise coming from Debney, whose career has excelled in genre extremes (e.g. End of Days, Cutthroat Island). The "Theme from Relative Values" is a cheeky yet catchy motif for guitar and piano backed by bass and drums (as opposed to drum & bass). Between the dialogue cuts, the re-emergence of this theme is highly welcome, as is the offshoots in style. The other voice of the score is a more predictable English jauntiness--something familiar to a Merchant Ivory audience. A terrifically schizophrenic cue juggling both styles is "Miranda & Nigel Arrive" with outrageous brass wails countered by pocket scherzos. A mixed bag of nuts worth shelling out on.--Paul Tonks |
