レビュー (Amazon)
Bursting from their multicoloured and rather bizarre TV show, the Allstars' self-titled debut follows four reasonably successful singles. However, it's doubtful that this first long-play offering will do much for their profile except cement their status as a poor man's S Club.

The album features the aforementioned singles, a mixture of the incredibly cheesy "Best Friend" to their rather credible makeover of Bucks Fizz's "Land of Make Believe" which, along with the other cover version of Duran Duran's "Is There Something I Should Know", is one of the album's best tracks. The rest of the tracks sound like S Club b-sides, without much variation or originality. There's a decent roll call of writers including one-woman hit machine Cathy Dennis (fast becoming the UK's answer to Diane Warren) and ex-D:ream star Peter Cunnah, but what's on offer here suffers from lacklustre production and it's all a bit too much like diet-pop. There's plenty of hooks but its left to the bonus remix CD of the limited edition to really get things pumping, with the likes of Almighty and Xenomania adding some much needed dancefloor zest to the proceedings--such as the terrific version of the new single "Back When".

With the demise of Steps, there is a vacancy in the boy-girl group motel of pop, but the All Stars are going to have to work a little harder to see off the might of those S Clubbers. --Jonathan Weir
