発売日:2004年3月30日(火) レーベル:Varese Sarabande レビュー (Amazon)The robust main theme from Elmer Bernstein's orchestral Western masterpiece quickly outgrew its source material to become one of the most memorable musical advertising hooks of all time, and then an international pops concert staple. But despite its status as American cultural icon and the stuff of film scoring legend, Bernstein's original soundtrack to John Sturges' landmark Western remake of The Seven Samurai ironically didn't see an official release for nearly 40 years (and then only briefly). Now back in print with new notes, Elmer's epochal soundtrack retains its place as one of the all-time greats, a tribute to both Bernstein's sly scoring genius (watch the film without sound and one will quickly see how Elmer drives its otherwise lackadaisical pacing relentlessly forward) and his accomplished, ever inquisitive training as a classical composer. The touchstone here is early Bernstein mentor Aaron Copland, but Elmer also wisely turns to the Mexican folk motifs that inspired much of the former's own landmark concert and ballet pieces. Though Bernstein has often wryly credited Copland with an assist, it's indeed pure Elmer -- and a dazzling example of how the student can sometimes gratifyingly outclass the master. --Jerry McCulley

発売日:1999年7月27日(火) レーベル:RCA レビュー (Amazon)Still for many the ultimate Western, The Magnificent Seven's unarguable position as one of the very best movies in the genre is aided immeasurably by Elmer Bernstein's extraordinarily rich score. It's impossible to picture Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen et al riding abreast without hearing that definitive theme; impossible to visualise the depredations of Eli Walach's nasty Calvera without hearing those angry brass motifs. The music quite literally gallops along on an underlying rhythm that pulsates in time with the horse riders on screen--although Bernstein's masterstroke was always to ensure his tempi were that little bit faster, so all the action cracks along at a tremendous pace. There's also plenty of Spanish colour in the score--guitars and mariachi-style trumpets--and it's all tied together with the kind of harmonic complexity that was unusual in film music then, and even more so now. The original soundtrack album obviously has the stamp of authenticity, but its mono sound is poor. Here Bernstein remains faithful to the original and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra under his guidance give this vivid music all the spirit and colour it deserves. Only the guitar playing lets them down: it sounds like it was recorded in another room. The booklet notes are sadly deficient, but the music itself more than compensates. Undeniably, this is a classic. -- Mark Walker

発売日:1998年9月29日(火) レーベル:Rykodisc レビュー (Amazon)The Magnificent Seven (1960) established Elmer Bernstein as the premiere composer of music for American westerns (a tradition that continued almost 40 years later in 1999 with his score for Will Smith's Wild Wild West). In this remake of Akira Kurosawa's The Seven Samurai (1954), Bernstein's vigorous, physical score operates in the foreground, propelling the action and describing the film's sprawling landscapes. A blending of American and Mexican influences, the music is written for full orchestra and features native percussion instruments including castanets, marimbas, claves and log drums. Even the casual filmgoer will not fail to recognise the main theme. Equally impressive, though less familiar, is the brassy motif for Calvera's band and the lyrical love theme for Chico and Petra, performed by acoustic guitar. Although a number of re-recordings exist, including a 1993 presentation conducted by James Sedares for Koch International and a BMG Classics production conducted by the composer, there can be no substitute for the original soundtrack. Supervised by Emilie Bernstein, the composer's daughter, this 67-minute disc includes all of the score's highlights in perfectly acceptable mono sound. --Kevin Mulhall
