レビュー (Amazon)Starting with Native American throat singing and ambient synth effects, you'd be forgiven for thinking that John Barry had found new voice for this score for the
Scarlet Letter. The "Main Title" and later on "The Bird" both belong to Peter Buffett, however. Each slowly segues into a suddenly far more familiar, John Barry style, and that momentary shock dissolves. For the rest of the lengthy disc, there is much to admire in the composer's sombre portrait of supposed witchery. There are numerous takes on his grand theme, which comes off soaringly with the English Chamber Orchestra brass. One curiosity is the choral and flute rendition of Samuel Barber's
Adagio for Strings: in this format it could very easily be something from the Barry canon, although at 10 minutes it rather pads the disc. --
