レビュー (Amazon)The composer's earlier work on
The Ice Storm with director Ang Lee briefly categorised Mychael Danna as an experimentalist with a very distinctive voice.
Ride With The Devil, their second collaboration, shows an ear for history while retaining that voice. "Opening Credits" quickly paints the backdrop of unspoiled American fields and with a dash of mandolin the proudly simple folk are coloured in as well. The heroic stature of the renegade soldiers in the movie is immeasurably heightened by the main theme. During "Clark Farm Shootout" the rendition is powerfully accompanied on timpani and assorted percussion. Both geographically and historically this soundtrack feels spot on--especially with quaint fireside songs like "Old King Crow". The order in which these play out may initially interrupt the flow of enjoying Danna's material in development, but that's a minor annoyance easily sorted.
