Doctor Who:Early Years 1963[Soundtrack] [Import]Alistair Lock John Debney Mark Ayres Ron Grainer
レーベル：BBC Legends レビュー (Amazon) It's been so easy to sympathetically think back on the series as budget-challenged chintz. Contemporary technology is like a comfort zone of superiority against TV of the past; what really mustn't be forgotten is how appreciated Dr. Who was in its day for technical innovation. And that's where this first volume comes in: the Hartnell and Troughton years-apart from being blessed with Ron Grainer's immortal theme--were often tracked with sourced library cues. The majority of playtime is thereby made up by the unique sound designers then resident at the BBC's Radiophonic Workshop (principally Brian Hodgson, Delia Derbyshire, and Dick Mills). While this hardly makes for any sort of light musical experience, it is nonetheless a fascinating record of electronic sound at its genesis. Twenty-two episodes are covered in various fashions, there's the old-piano-and-a-key "Original TARDIS Effect", but most importantly a chronicling of each stage of the Grainer theme. Preparing for the continuation on Volume Two is a final, unused rendition. --Paul Tonks |

Doctor Who:R'phonic Workshop 1[Soundtrack] [Import]Alistair Lock John Debney Mark Ayres Ron Grainer 発売日：2001年7月27日(金)
レーベル：BBC Legends レビュー (Amazon) Picking straight up from Volume One, the Pertwee years and the transition into the scarf-wearing Baker are covered. It was perhaps the greatest period of change for the series: colour, Earth-bound setting, a greater sense of continuity and behind-the-scenes, a ceaseless experimentation to be at the forefront of electronic music and sound design by the BBC's Radiophonic Workshop. Chiefly responsible for the beeps and squeaks were Dudley Simpson and Brian Hodgson. Their work from "The Mind Of Evil" and "The Claws Of Axos", together with Delia Derbyshire's "Inferno", make up the album's first half. The chronology then passes on to Malcolm Clarke's revolutionary dabblings with the "Delaware" (a room-filling modular analogue synthesiser) for "The Sea Devils". Like Volume One, there's more electronic history than musical artistry to be appreciated, and this is especially true of the Sound Effects suite which includes great titles like "Nerva Beacon Infrastructure & T-Mat Couch". Finishing on the demos that landed Peter Howell further work in the show's third decade, the album closes with his long-lastingly stunning re-working of the classic title theme. --Paul Tonks |

Dr. Who: Terror Of The Zygons/The Seed Of Doom (2000 TV Movie)[Soundtrack] [Import]Bill McGuffie Malcolm Lockyer
レーベル：BBC Legends レビュー (Amazon) This album contains not only 30 minutes of music from Geoffrey Burgon's score for the Doctor Who serial Terror of the Zygons, but also 46 minutes from The Seeds of Doom, both of which stared Tom Baker as The Doctor. Terror of the Zygons concerned aliens living beneath Loch Ness, while The Seeds of Doom reworked the classic SF movie The Thing (From Another World). Burgon's scores employ flute, clarinet, harp, violin, cello, clavichord and percussion, together with electronic processing by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop and numerous imaginative performance techniques. The result is a sequence of stark and weirdly unsettling soundscapes that instantly evoke memories of classic Doctor Who. Beyond the very occasional pastoral moment, melody is far away, making this a very different musical world to Burgon's Brideshead Revisited, yet sharing something in common with his acclaimed Requiem. The album tracks are taken from the composer's own listening copy of the original mono tapes, and while purists may object to the subtle stereo reverb which has been added, the sound is remarkably clear and detailed. The album also features Ron Grainger's familiar opening and closing title music. --Gary S. Dalkin |
