レビュー (Amazon) The score to Derek Jarman's The Last Of England is a montage of grey, glistening strings; desperate disco mania; power lines meditating on a spiritually thermodynamic "Om"; and poetic rants about the overdue demise of the British Empire. Of these spoken pieces, Jarman said they were "my reaction to the view from this window of culture riddled with death-watch beetle"--a statement that can be applied to both the film itself and Simon Fisher Turner's tremendously cacophonous yet picturesque score. The foundation for Turner's pieces are Bach's Violin Sonatas, to which he adds disobedient percussion shots, the shams of sidewalk hustlers, arcing synthesiser bolts, and what sounds like a piano being hammered like a roofing nail. While artists like Mayo Thompson, Barry Adamson, and Andy Gill also contribute to this sonic layering, vocalist Diamanda Galas offers two of the strongest compositions. "The Thirteenth Returns" is subjugated by a flock of horror-movie organs, while "Deliver Me" features Galas' grossly hypnotic style of singing--like a mummy intoning an excruciatingly complex curse. Jarman's England isn't one blessed with hope and glory, but the score at least hints at the chance of a rebirth through death. --Michael Woodring
