レビュー (Amazon)Lighthouse (1999) is that rare beast, a British serial killer thriller that, complete with beautiful young doctor heroine, Rachel Shelly, recalls Elizabeth Hurley's
Bedlam (1993). This soundtrack album is not for the faint-hearted, either; Debbie Wiseman's score is a robust journey into nightmare, occupying a very different territory to the composer's work for
Wilde (1997) and
Warriors (1999). Those seeking memorable tunes should look elsewhere, though quieter moments offer brooding vistas and hint at a tormented lullaby not to be. What Wiseman offers is a real sense of implacable power, of music as indomitable as the unleashed elements, the harsh setting of the drama, the inevitability of death. Built on a solid architecture of majestically glacial strings and brass, electronics are kept to a supporting role, Wiseman adds hard metallic percussion and distant reverberating pulses, creating a canvas of portentously epic scale. Dark to the core, those who appreciate the extremes of Howard Shore's
The Silence of the Lambs or John Williams'
The Fury will be happy in this hell.
