レビュー (Amazon)There have been plenty of adaptations of Robert Louis Stevenson's yarn, but how many can boast a kilted Michael Caine? This 1971 version bristles with swashbuckling charm. It also has a most memorable romantic theme, which you'd swear blind is a deconstruction of Henry VIII's classic "Greensleeves". The "Overture" belts it out at its heroic height and then finishing the disc is "For All My Days", which presents it as a love song. Mary Hopkin's vocal is most soulful, conjuring images of the Highlands as easily as has Budd's sweeping score in between. His use of bagpipes may seem rather obvious but when they bellow out a military tattoo as good as "The Edinburgh Castle", it seems unfair to cry "cliche". The one moment where things go a little awry is the gentle guitar for the love story of "David and Catriona". This secondary motif feels like it belongs in a Western. The collection of pipes in the remainder make up for this minor jarring sensation. --
