レビュー (Amazon)This version of Charlotte Bronte's classic Gothic romance is the 1971 television film starring George C Scott and Susannah York, produced in part to capitalise on the success of the previous year's version of Emily Bronte's
Wuthering Heights. That production had a fine score by Michael Legrand (composer of the original
Thomas Crown Affair and
The Umbrellas of Cherbourg). John Williams won his first Oscar for his film adaptation of the musical
Fiddler on the Roof in the same year he composed the original music for this
Jane Eyre, which is perhaps his most lyrically affecting score, and so thoroughly English as to be a powerful testament to this American composer's ability to adapt his own deeply melodic sensibility to any musical style.
The beautiful main theme leads to an overture depicting the main material of the score. "To Thornfield" is a thrilling scherzo, while later selections pastiche a baroque string quartet or provide chilling atmospheric writing. The final selections are as lovely and tender as anything John Williams has written, making this haunting work one of his greatest scores. Williams returned to English Gothic with his thrilling Dracula (1979). The remastered sound on this album is excellent, and though there is some slight distortion, this is still an essential album for all John Williams enthusiasts. --Gary S Dalkin
