These, after all, are largely the kind of too-cool-for-school indie bands--Nada Surf, Death Cab for Cutie, Eels, Interpol--you'd normally expect to run screaming from anything so heavily soaked in mainstream reek. Credit the show's exceptional music supervisor Alexandra Patsavas, then, with rounding them up and wrangling them into contributing, and also for choosing her selections carefully. More than a collection that would slip effortlessly into any hipster's car CD player for its left of the dial leanings, 2 showcases many of these emerging bands' best songs yet: The Thrills' "Big Sur" is a sun-soaked slice of pop heaven, "Maybe I'm Amazed" makes elegant use of a cover to capture the dreaminess of the darkly talented Jem, and "You Got Me All Wrong," by Dios Malos, is maybe the most ravishing rainy day rock song ever written. As with the first O.C. mix, 2 is enhanced with scenes from the show. In only nine tracks, it establishes itself as a thoroughly modern, cynical, but likeably wide-eyed antidote to the heap of jingle-bell-heavy offerings currently crowding holiday music racks. Best thought of as a compilation cobbled together by a clear-headed, alt-minded friend, Chrismukkah, so named for the fictional Cohen family's seasonal culture-blending holiday, highlights a far-reaching lineup of indie favorites. Jimmy Eat World covers the Wham! classic "Last Christmas" with characteristic punch and panache, Eels chew into "Christmas Is Going to the Dogs" like they mean it, Leona Naess channels vintage Joni Mitchell on "Christmas," and the ever-understated Ron Sexmith dares to dream on "Maybe This Christmas." Rarely has a TV show so captured a certain musical zeitgeist as well as The OC has, to the point that the series has become one of the best ways for smallish bands to break through. Collecting songs that have appeared in seasons 2 and 3, this CD is remarkably consistent in its aesthetics: Obviously in 2005 cool kids have been listening to a lot of very danceable rock and pop (Kasabian's "Reason Is Treason," LCD Soundsystem's "Daft Punk Is Playing at My House," Gorillaz's "Kids With Guns," Kaiser Chiefs' "Na Na Na Na Naah") tempered by a smiden of articulate, sensitive songwriting (Shout-Out Louds' "Wish I Was Dead Pt. 2," Stars' "Your Ex-Lover Is Dead"). The tracks here aren't innovative, but they are remarkably easy to like--even love. The real gems are actually tucked in at the end of the album: Phantom Planet's wistful reworking of the show's theme song, "California 2005," and Imogen Heap's dreamy, Vocoderized Kate Bush-like "Hide and Seek." --Elisabeth Vincentelli |

キャスト・スタッフミーシャ・バートン、ベンジャミン・マッケンジー、アダム・ブロディ、レイチェル・ビルソン、ピーター・ギャラガー、ミーシャ・バートン.ベンジャミン・マッケンジー.アダム・ブロディ.レイチェル・ビルソン レビュー (Amazon) 一見、普通のティーン向けドラマのようだが、その華麗かつ太陽に彩られたドラマ『The O.C.』を一度観れば、数々の驚くほどよく発現されたキャラクターやドラマの慣習をもてあそんでいるのがわかる。舞台設定は極めてハイコンセプトで、魅力的な悩めるライアン（ベンジャミン・マッケンジー）は悪の道に足を踏み入れつつあるチノ出身の善良な若者だが、弁護士サンディ・コーエン（ピーター・ギャラガー）のおかげでオレンジ・カウンティーの大邸宅や手入れの行き届いた芝生の道を悪い方へ踏み外さずに済む。やがてライアンはコーエンのプールハウスに住みはじめ、裕福だが問題を抱える娘マリッサ（ミーシャ・バートン）と関わったり、また裕福でもそうでなくてもでたらめに変わりはないのに、彼の新居に歴然とある社会的境界に憤然とするのだ。それでもどうにか彼は周囲の外面の良い連中から人間性を引出し、彼らは彼と知り合うことで成長していく。 『ビバリーヒルズ青春白書』のシナリオはもう沢山としても、『The O.C.』は最近の記憶では一番病みつきになるTVドラマであり、また考えさせられる番組となった。『メルローズ・プレイス』よりスマートで、『ビバリーヒルズ高校白書』よりセクシーで、『フェリシティ』より可笑しくて、『ドーソンズ・クリーク』ほど自己陶酔的でなく、『The O.C.』は巧妙かつ陽気な会話（パイロットエピソードはWGAにノミネートされている）と、気まぐれで常軌を逸した登場人物に溢れている。特筆すべきは、新人スターのアダム・ブローディ。彼は、ライアンの風変わりで新しもの好きの兄弟分セス役で、ティーンの憧れの対象としての地位を、ラッセル・クロウ似のマッケンジーから事実上奪い取った形だ。バートンは、悩みを抱えるマリッサ役として少々表情に欠けるが、彼女の親友でこの上なく外面のいいサマー役でレイチェル・ビルソンが笑いを誘い、完璧な脇役を演じている。そして大人たち、特に脇を固めるコーエン家のギャラガーおよびケリー・ローワンが、ドラマに円熟性をもたらしている。隔週毎に殴り合いや誰かがプールに落ちてエピソードが終わるような（時にはその両方）テレビランドの面白さを『The O.C.』が忘れ去ってしまったというのではない。本作は、罪の意識なく心から愉しめるドラマなのだ。(Mark Englehart, Amazon.com)
