レビュー (Amazon)A collection of music from Hal Hartley's first four features (
Surviving Desire,
The Unbelievable Truth,
Trust, and
Simple Men) and one early short (
Theory of Achievement), this CD features some of Hartley's catchiest compositions. (That they happen to be cues for his films makes them no less fun to listen to.) Played on guitar and keyboard, his compositions tend to be short, repetitive chord progressions that build inexorably--and stay in your head for weeks. Though Yo La Tengo's two contributions can both be found elsewhere, Ether's wonderfully ethereal "Rue des Jours" and Hub Moore's cannot. Moore went on to contribute to other Hartley works, and his solo album,
Hub, is also recommended.
