レビュー (Amazon)Running against prevailing trends, melody has always been the cornerstone of Debbie Wiseman's music, be it in her film scores from
Wilde to
Warriors or in her concert works, such as the beguiling
Oscar Wilde Fairy Tale suites. It's a pleasure to report then that the score for
Tom's Midnight Garden, Willard Carroll's affectionate big-screen version of the much-loved children's classic, is quintessential Debbie Wiseman: warm-hearted, nostalgically wistful, then ebullient and playful by turns, evoking the film's sense of innocent wonder through a series of strong, primary-coloured melodies. The principle "Tom" theme soars lyrically throughout, providing the central element of an already cohesive score (appropriately, the theme is performed in song by Barbara Dickson as "After Always"). There is also a sprightly dance-like theme, first heard in "Fulfilment of a Promise" (breezy woodwinds abound), as well as a reflective piece in which descending intervals suggest a more sombre mood ("Please Don't Walk Through Me"). The warm orchestration and unity of orchestral forces across the whole album further contribute to the impression that this is a fully conceived "suite" of music, not just an assemblage of diverse cues. Meticulously constructed and through-composed with great care, this is both exemplary film scoring and joyful, melodious music making. A long-awaited treat for admirers of this composer. --
