Tous les Matins du Monde was the 1991 art-house hit which brought the music of Marin Marais and Saint Colombe and the extraordinary artistry of viola de gamba player Jordi Savall to wide attention. The original bestselling album is now supplanted by this reissue on Savall's own label. Offering a portrait of 17th-century France, the disc gives equal time to Marais, representing the world of the court at Versailles and to Colombe's stark musical austerity.

Several pieces are for solo basse de viole, allowing Savall to fully explore the often sombre colours within the music, while other works are accompanied by violin, theorbo (a double necked lute) and clavichord. Savall also includes three of his own arrangements made for the film, a short ceremonial march by Lully, and Couperin's Troisieme Lecon de Tenebres. Performed with the sopranos Montserrat Figueras and Maria Christina Kiehr, the resplendent beauty of this single-movement, 12-minute work illuminates the often introspective nature of the surrounding music. Extended to 76 minutes, this impeccably produced new version of a landmark soundtrack offers remastered sound and is luxuriously presented in a fold-out digipack with a lavishly illustrated full colour booklet. --Gary S Dalkin

Whether or not you saw the film Tous les matins du monde, you owe it to yourself to either discover or revisit its soundtrack, which features the music of two great figures of 17th-century France: Saint Colombe and his pupil Marin Marais. Saint Colombe, about whom little is known, was a great viol player who was acclaimed for his improvisations. Marais became a member of the famed court orchestra under Lully (some of whose music also appears on the disc) at a very young age. One of the joys of this recording is the sound of the bass viol, an instrument rarely played by itself, especially in such a virtuoso manner. Jordi Savall is the undisputed modern master of the instrument, and he shows us why on this program. As an added bonus, two outstanding vocal pieces are sung with endearing purity, flawless technique, and impeccable intonation by two perfectly matched sopranos. --David Vernier
