レビュー (Amazon) Thanks to the technology pioneered in Babe, George Orwell's metaphorical masterpiece can finally be brought to life realistically. Composer Richard Harvey's initial take on the story is that of a nobly struggling commune deserving powerful portrayal in an anthem for the oppressed ("Storm of Judgement/Main Title"). This full-scale orchestral lament appears in bolder and steadily brighter arrangements through the score (notably in "Boxer's Fate"). But the aspect of real note here are the Russian-influenced songs for independence, often sung by male chorus. These are either paeans or prayers of servitude to the governmental seat ("Glorious Leader Napoleon !"). The album makes for a very full hour of music, with the songs bringing the nicest surprises. In addition, there are surprising colours in the instrumentation that show this to be a well thought out score: for the finale ("We Were Never Free"), Harvey dips into Hans Zimmer's style (Crimson Tide to be specific) for a denouement of thumping pride. Overall, it's a most rousing salute to Orwell, the possibilities for televisual scoring, and the oppressed hordes everywhere. --Paul Tonks |
